“Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.” - William F. Buckley

I don't know what college you attended, but maybe the students should have gone to the officials about that if it bothered them. That is hardly the only place they can listen to opposing views.
I have listened to opposing views and only become angry because I think they are causing matters to be worse than they had to be. You're inferring they will talk some sense into the liberals while the liberals feel the same about the opposition. It's a two-way street.
These students no doubt want this man to come to Columbia to speak because they fear being tricked into another war and would like a chance to decide about this person for themselves. I'd like to see that myself. I bet they'll have him squirming.

I am not sure that Democrats (a.k.a. liberals) are the only ones guilty of this. Republicans often try to shut down opposing view points as well. This observation you have astutely observed is indicative of closed minded humans in general.
There are indeed open minded Republicans and Democrats in our nation, but unfortunately they are few and far between.
And interesting enough Democrats are polar opposites to the Iranian regime and leadership. "Liberals" supporting Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia, is not evidence that Democrats support Ahmadinejad; in fact Ahmadinejad is more Conservative then Rumsfeld. Remember Iran is a theocracy not a socialist regime.
I would be happy to hear Rumsfeld or Ahmadinejad speak. It is important to understand your adversaries

When someone decides they are liberal it is usually after realizing that everything you have heard about from a conservative perspective over and over again is devoid of any opinion other than their doctrine.
I was raised in the Catholic religion. Pretty conservative that Catholic religion. I found no answers to many of the questions I had. Lots of speculation and faith based opinions though.
I haven't heard anything from the conservatives that sounds any different from the stuff they've been spouting for eons.
I don't like the manual the conservatives have provided on how they think people are supposed to live their lives.
Just to clarify here ...no god provided this manual ....men did. Men who called themselves God's messengers. Mohammed, Jesus, Moses and all the others. If these people had actually been given messages from God to deliver to his creation.....why would have given such different messages??? He wouldn't of course.....because this didn't happen!
I do think there is a 'morals' clause in any successful society, but I don't think someone necessarily has to be conservative or religious to know that you should treat others as you want to be treated. That's just common sense.

I am a liberal and I do not want the Fairness Doctrine. Who are talking about? Shouting down a speaker is an example of free speech and rudeness. The New York Times rejected the McCain editiorial because it said nothing new, and did not define what victory in Iraq is.

I dabbled in Socialism, Communism while in college and ended up leaving a Libertarian though I belong to no party. Most of my professors were Liberals with a few socialists and one communist. None of them respected any ones opinion except one conservative professor who was a former Communist but became conservative while living in San Francisco. He was the only one I could write papers and not fear getting a bad grade because he disagreed.

Really? Where did you go to college? I go to a public University and I don;t think it's fair that pro-lifers are allowed to have their annual demonstration but pro-choicers are not.
President Bush AND President Clinton spoke on our campus. They have very different viewpoints and Bush definitely isn't liberal.

You sound like a very bright person! Liberals don't want to answer to anybody. All they care about is me, myself, and I. That's why they are so dangerous. Responsible Republicans know that you need to hear all points of view and that we can learn from each other. When you're only thinking about what you want, you have a closed mind. Leaders need to be open. And we also need to plant our feet and stand firm when we know we are right.
