Currently you can play Wii and Gamecube games, from the disc, on the Wii. As I understand it the GameBoy Player works on the Wii as well. You can also accquire some of the older games through the internet for playing on the Wii, though they cost money.
My suggestion/advice, is simply hold on to older units. Here is a quick breakdown for Nintendo.
If you own an
Original NES
Super NES
N64
Wii
Gameboy Color
Nintendo DS
Virtual Boy
You will have enough systems to play all, currently at least, games.

You can play every gamecube game. All you need is a gamecube controller and a memory card of course. You can also download classics from the wii shop channel.

Gamecube games can be played on the Wii with a gamecube controller and gamecube memory card. You can download retro games from Sega Mega Drive and Snes etc. from the wii shopping channel (with wii points)

err, you can play gamecube games on the wii but you need the classic controller I believe. There are some old classic games on the wii shopping channel that you can download and play on the wii as well but you need wii points to download them. They have old games like DK and stuff..

I play HM on my wii all the time. Take any gamecube game put it in, on the top open the flap thing, plug in the gamecube controllers and memory card, then go to wii menu select the disc channel, and click gamecube game or whatever you have to click. Enjoy. :]

you can play every single gamecube game on there but you only download the games for older consoles
it's kinda the opposite because you cant download gamecube games but you can play them if you have them for you gamecube
older games for older consoles is the opposite you can download them but cannot play them if you have the actual
game in your hand
you can play all of the older games with the classic controller and if it's a certain game then with the wii remote
you can also play older games with the gamecube controller
you can only buy the older games with wii points and you get those by buying point cards at gamestop or by using your credit card
i heard on gameinformer that there is going to be new sofware for the to where you can sell your miis for wii points

If its the gamecube version then yes it will work, though you will need a gamecube controller and memory card, the classic controller doesn't work for cube games I've tried.
