Everytime someone asks a question like "What are good punk bands?" they get answers such as AFI, Blink I82, Sum 41, Breaking Benjamin and all that stuff.
With everyother genre I can think of, at least 50% of the answers given were to the correct genre, but not with punk.
The poor punks....
Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes. Other than emo, it is the most poorly understood genre. It seems a lot of the children on here have no idea what real punk was (and is today). Most of the blame has to go to radio and MTV. I really don't care what anyone has to say about AFI and their latest material. They are and will always be punk. The gay "number" bands aren't and never will be. It shouldn't be that hard to decipher real punk from poser punk. Yet the children remain in an MCR haze.

punk was in its heyday 30 years ago, when it really meant something, bands such as The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Voidoids and the like were what true punk rock bands were, what is out now should be labeled as new wave punk and not punk because it distorts the true legacy of the original punk bands.

The problem with many of the groups out now is that many of them can be placed into multiple categories which should not be. You should be beholden to the genre of punk and not something else. The other issue is that once a band gets into the mainstream (an entirely different problem) they often times forget what truly got them into the mainstream to begin with and they begin to change their sound altogether and they sound like an entirely different band.

The bands that you have listed AFI, Blink182, Sum 41, Breaking Benjamin I personally consider as pop punk or pseudo punk because they can sing and dress the part, however are they truly punk?

I think the reason that people are thumbs downing answers is simply because some people do not know what real punk rock is and never will.

Also how in the hell can emo even be considered punk? Back in the mid 80's it was a subgenre of hardcore punk and since the 90's emo refers to the indie scene and not punk, so I ask you how the hell can emo even be considered punk?

Besides punk means a young male hustler, a gangster, a hoodlum, or a ruffian, how many of these "bands" can be considered thus? They are nothing more than corporate whores out to make a quick buck.

I completely feel that way. I think it may have something to do with the music industry needing a lable for the new crap that is coming out these days and they figure that since these guys have tattoos and wear a studded belt that it must be punk. I don't think they know what else to call it, "pansy rock" just doesn't have the same marketable ring to it as "punk". It hurts my heart a bit everytime I hear one of those bands referred to as punk.

Hell ya its misunderstood. Real punk was in the 70's and 80's with black flag, misfits, crass, clash, ramones, casualties and those types. In the 90's, id say Rage Against the Machine was the closest thing to punk, cause it had the same attitude. Punk was all about rebellion. It did start cause the kids were gettin bored with Jimmy Page's 2 hour gitar solos.

I've said before. I will say it again. Joey Ramone is rolling in his grave. Some sh*tty member of some sh*tty band got a tattoo and said "Look at me, I'm so punk." and was all downhill from there.

just to correct you, AFI was punk in their earlier days (90s) they're not as much punk now as they were before so that's probably what got you a bit mixed up. :)
