Play "This or that". You put together a list of things and then you say two of them. One belongs to the left side of the room and then other belongs to the right side of the room. You say do you like (name the item or idea) or (name the other item or idea). As you say them point to the different sides of the room so that people know which belongs to which side. Then, people move to the side the like more. They get to see how many people are like them and they get to move around. It sounds goofy but when you do it, it is fun to see who likes what you like.

this may be too "dorky" but each person has a piece of paper taped to their back and they don't know what it says, perhaps everyone is an animal or flower or ??? and as they go from person to person they can ask one question to try and determine what they are and the answer can only be yes or no or a variation of this, As a teacher we often did this in our summer classes. You can really do a variant on it for age approprate, maybe names of singing groups/bands in your age group you all like ?????????/ Been a long time since I was in 8th grade. structure it for fun but make it hard.

One that we used to do when I was in school and (I thought) was fun is a game you write on the board, where you have to figure out the similarities. It goes along these lines:

Pepper but not salt
Cookies but not milk
Puppy but not dog
Rooster but not chicken

Basically, this set is words with double letters (pp, oo). It's the hardest thing to figure out for other students, unless you have a super-genius in your class. To get to know everyone, they have to say your name before they answer.

However... this might be hard to do if you're not the one writing the set on the board... Good luck though! :)

How about an ongoing mini talent show. Students may want to sing together in a small group, tell jokes, do slight of hand tricks, read a poem, whatever.
