You mark your work with a circled C,name and the date. You do this BEFORE the art is released for public viewing. This mark indicates that you "intend" to register that copy write at your earliest convenience. The "intent" should be on the front of the work when it can been seen. This mark should discourage others from printing copies. Most copy centers will not print something copy write marked.

The time between creating/marking and "registering at your earliest convenience" has never been set down. Once released for public viewing you cannot go back and copy write.

At least this was the law the last time I had need to check. On some items, I send myself a copy through the mail. When it comes, DO NOT OPEN IT. You have a copy with a good date in case you have to prove your ownership. Mark the outside of the envelop for you know what is in it.

Just write (c) and your name on the back of the drawing, and you are legally protected. You don't have to register a copyright on an artistic work, although you can do so if you want to be very safe. Also, when you present your work (for example: if you send a copy to a publication or post it online), include (c) your name along with the work.
