The gnats may be coming from your drains. Pour PineSol or other such cleaner down each sink, put in the plug and leave the house for awhile....take the ferrets. (gets a bit overpowering plus it needs awhile to work) Come home and turn on the water washing the stuff down thru the pipes. If you can't take the ferrets, pour salad oil down each sink, let sit over night, that should do it too.
Now the flies: they may not be typical filth flies. This time of year there's a strange pollinating fly that comes in to live with us. Nuisance, yes, healthy risk, not really. Fly paper strips aren't pretty but are effective.

There are several hundred different types of gnats and you first need to identify the type of gnat in your house. They respond (die) to different types of treatment. To do this, contact the University Extension Agent in your area so that you can provide samples for identification. There is no cost for their help. The Extension Agent will give you the name of a product to buy for that particular type of gnat.

gnats live of the fresh peat soil and the dead roots of household plants. So if you have plants at home either dry them out for a week or put them outside for a couple of hours if you can. Also put the stoppers in your sinks , this way they will have no where moist and damp to hide. But remove the plants if you have and you will notice the difference straight away

The source of the gnats is the place they're laying their eggs. The adults stay for 7-10 days. they may well be laying their eggs in some plant soil. A potato or onion. The commode tank. In an previous soda. the place a great style of them are soaring, it quite is the place the eggs are. some soapy water placed out will drown them. A drop of vinegar in it is going to attraction to them.

There is a spray called Bengal Roach Spray that kills everything. You can get it at Lowes. It's 12.99 a can. But is worth every penny. These things were attracted to my dog's food and hung out around the sink as well. I sprayed everywhere I saw them and they were dead in a few days. Cleaning out the drains in the sink is a good idea also. Good luck.

Put small jar tops or bowls of vinegar in each room (out of the reach of the children and ferret).
