The hymen is a thin membrane hich is sometimes intact in virgins and sometimes not. It has a small opening and as the penis penetrates it and begins to stretch and break it, it bleeds. Some blood loss is also from the inside of the vagina (microvessels) bleeding with first time contact with a penis.
girls who have masturbated by inserting a toy etc sometimes do not experience as much bleeding or any. Also girls who ride horses etc sometimes have it broken by this activity repated time and again.
it is not uncommon for the hymen to be broken before sexual contact and in some people there is bleeding several times during intercourse as the hymen stretches to accomodate sexual penetration.

The blood comes from capilary blood vessals in the hymen. The hymen in the tissue that partitly covers the entrance to the vagina.
