I work in a clothing store, and with just a well-placed 5 cent remark I can convince these weak-willed women to buy an expensive outfit that she doesn't need.

Are women naturally slaves to their vanity ? or is it SOCIETY'S fault for teaching women to value beauty so much?

The media, hands down.

If you ever take part in a class or study that teaches you about the history and effects of media, you'll understand that very well.

Even if people don't want to admit it, advertising works on a lot of them! So, because of that, women have fallen into a trend where they think that they have to be a certain way, dress a certain way, buy certain products, etc. Not ALL women are guilty of this, but it is -extremely- common.

I personally don't give a crap about the media. :p I don't care what anyone but my family and my hubby thinks about me. Because of this, I won't buy your expensive outfits, no matter how good of a salesperson you are! Hehe. I think that's just from how I was raised though. My mother did a great job. :p

Anyways, this isn't some innate gene found in women. It's from the history of fashion, women's rights, beauty, so on and so forth. Also, not sure I mentioned this before...but women are expected to be a certain way in Western culture. Or so the media says.

If you don't get paid commission, I would rethink how you sell your products, hehe. Though, everyone has to understand that you're just doing your job; and doing it well, so it seems. Good luck and take care.

Maybe they feel the more exspensive it is, the better it is. I agree w/ the other answers. Women associate beauty w/ success and sometimes their vanity is the problem. I have an aunt who is so vain, I can't stand her. If it weren't for her husbands money, she'd be nothing but a little wimp. The money made her that way. If you want to be a really good salesman and actually help people, show them the alternatives and let the women decide. You'll actually gain respect and perhaps a little more pride in yourself. And in the end, that's what makes you a better person. I guarantee you'll be a very happy person.

Women aren't naturally slaves to vanity.

Society is at fault for making women believe that how they look is the only thing that other people will care about.

Oh nonsense. Go to your local mall and take a gander at most the people walking around there. If you're American you'll most likely see an abundance of unkempt blobs of fat in sweats. Some women are slaves to vanity, some aren't.

Women have far less testosterone than men, even at the peak of their cycle. Testosterone is a major player in making a person feel confident. Therefore, women are more likely than men to need outside assurances.

Also, women are valued for their beauty more than men are. We know that. If the dress helps and we can afford it, then we will buy the dress.

I wouldn't call it vanity; in fact, I'd say it's the opposite.

Women are taught to be modest from an early age. We're told in Kindergarten that even if we think our drawing of a butterfly is better than Susie's drawing of a kitten or Larry's drawing of a flower, we can't say that, and we have to complement Susie and Larry's crappy drawings. Eventually, it gets to the point where we think that everybody else's stuff is better than ours. I know some BRILLIANT artists that insist their work is too horrible for them to consider art school.

It's the same for some women with appearances, I think. They think of themselves as very ugly, so when someone says, "That shirt brings out your eyes really wonderfully" or something, they feel that they need the shirt to look pretty.

You make a living out of blowing smoke up women's @sses. How proud you must be, but I digress...

The former is correct, women are naturally slaves to vanity.

We are not taught earlier enough in life that its what inside that makes us beautiful...

Clothes does not maketh the man..
I like to dress in one colour, I don't want my clothes to speak for me, I want my personality to shine through and my confidence carries that through...

Its up to us to see the beauty and comment on it...thats what you should be telling your clients..it will make them feel wonderful...and you'll not be lying now would you...
