I completely agree with you. This idea is simply authoritarianism gone mad.

Some people seem to be intent on turning the UK into a gigantic prison and removing all the civil rights of freedom and individual privacy that we have fought so hard for over the years.

The argument that "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" is exactly the same argument that Stalin used in the Soviet Union, and look at the atrocities that happened under his regime.

If we have nothing to hide, why would the authorities want to intrude into every aspect of our lives and keep tabs on us all? Honest, upstanding citizens must never be treated like convicted criminals.

Thank goodness the government have ruled the idea out. Hopefully it's an indication that Gordon Brown's government has more respect for individual freedom and privacy than Blair's government.

Now if only they would scrap the ID card scheme and do something about all those surveillance cameras........

it isn't fascist or contemptible - it's common sense in this day and age.

as i said in a previous similar question - have you any idea how many unidentified bodies are found in the UK every year - how many remains are stored by police until they can find next of kin - how many people are missing - some go back decades .
with a DNA data base bodies could be identified and families informed.
a lot of tax payers money goes into this - a DNA database could not only solve crime but identify unidentified bodies.

what difference does it make if its a baby or not- blood tests are done on babies all the time.

why do people always have to read something sinister into it.

if a child's body was found in Portugal that was unidentified - don't you think the mcanns would want to know if it was their daughter.

if you went missing out of choice or by foul means and a body was found , don't you think your family would want to know if it was you so they could bury you.

or if it was your body would you not want to be identified instead of sitting in storage .

stop reading big brother into everything- many serious crimes could be solved with a national compulsory database - the only conspiracy here is the one that seems determined to prevent the police from having all the tools they need to do their job properly

Yes, it does but you can't stop them taking it if they want to (not under present laws anyway).

Why would they need to drug you? Take a look at this by no means exhaustive list of how you can leave your DNA knocking about the place as a matter of routine:

Have you ever visited your doctor and maybe given a sample?
Have you ever been on a "drip" in a hospital?
Have you ever served in the Armed Forces?
Did you have a TB jab at school?
How often do you visit the dentist?
Have you ever had an injection for immunisation purposes (holiday jabs perhaps)?
Do you give blood?
What tools do you use at work? Anything from a spanner to a pen...
Do you use public transport?
Do you wear gloves to open the driver's door of your private car?
Where do you park your car?
Ever pushed open the front door of your home with the flat of your hand, or even your fingertips?
Have you ever entered a public building with those bar-type handles on the doors?
Who was the guy you shook hands with at the council offices/jobcentre/polling station?
What happened/will happen to your voter registration card at the polling station? Did you wear gloves to take it out of the envelope? They exchange it for a ballot paper and you don't get the VRC back again. Where does it go?

If they want your DNA on record that badly they won't necessarily have to conduct a face to face meeting to get it from you. Chances are that they already have it.

Have a happy and productive 1984, Citizen.

Surely this has got to be an infringement of Human Rights. They have enough on computers about us already. They will have to drag me kicking and screaming to give my DNA.

Yes. It is unthinkably awful. They even discussed putting all newborn babies on DNA database which is really contemptible.
