Hi:
Holly Tone would be fine but a great fertilizer is a slow six month nitrogen release fertilizer. This works well on all varieties of trees, shrubs, and flowers. You can find six month release fertilizers at any garden center or nursery. All big stores carry also carry this type of fertilizer.
Quick tip also if you are planting - organic mushroom compost is wonderful to apply to the soil before planting. This works well for one year. Doesn't smell great but the plants love it!
Apply the fertilizer in the spring and fall season. Make sure you only put a handful around the Privet bush. If too much fertilizer is applied, it will burn out the shrub and could kill it. Hope this some help to you and if you are in the fall season now, go ahead and apply the fertilizer.
Take a look at my site map on my website and browse through a variety of articles, photos, descriptions, outdoor features and simple solutions in landscaping. Let me know if I can help you out with anything else.

Don't fertilize now. Wait until next spring when it has leafed out. I don't know HollyTone, but assume it will be fine. (I'm assuming it's a Holly fertilizer) Privets are tough plants, they have to be to withstand the constant pruning we give them.

note... privet is so hardy it will grow without ever seeing a drop of fertilizer, too!..... since it is listed as an invasive in so many areas, please be a good gardener and keep your best eye on it!!.... *smile*..............
