Yesterday I received my Marie Claire issue and there is a six page story on "Erasing Ethnicity." The stories were informative and surprising. I was surprised to read that many people around the world, specially women, believe that white/western features are more beautiful.
I believe you should embrace who you are. Be proud of your ethnicity. Be proud of the shape of your eyes, your lips, hair, body, eye color and skin color.

Black women have been getting relaxers for decades. Straight hair was something desired by black women for centuries because it was what society deemed as "beautiful." Sadly, this mindset still exists within the black community and I am sad to say that I have only just recently come to the light.
I am going to go natural within the next year by adopting sisterlocks (a thinner style of dredlocks), saying goodbye to my chemically-raped straight hair for the rest of my life. I can't wait!
I think it's sad that so many black women find their naturally nappy hair so repulsive that they'll sit for hours upon end every 4 weeks to get damaging chemicals set into it. I can't count the number of times I've gotten chemical burns in my scalp from relaxers. Hurts like HELL! Why? WHY? It's something that's been ingrained into our minds is "the right thing to do."
Too bad. I wish more black women would realize that their unique hair texture is beautiful just the way it is.

I think that it's a sad trend, but the white/western look does increasingly seem to be an ideal in many different cultures. I am originally from SE Asia where the climate is very hot. You would expect to see people with tan skin, but the women try to keep their skin as white as possible, whether by avoiding the sun or by using skin whitening lotions. Darker skin is equated with the poorer workers who have to toil physically in the sun.
The women from my country, who are in America now, try to conform to the American beauty ideals, getting plastic surgery to enhance their busts, their eyes, their lips, their nose, etc.
I feel that it's a form of self-hate and self-denial. Sad . . . .

Everyone is not in love with the blond hair and blue eyes.
Get over your selves. There is nothing more beautiful than the hawaiian women with long black hair and tanned bodies and those grass skirts and that grass ankle braclet.

Honestly, maybe some people are prettier then others. So be it, I still do not think looks are the most important thing in the world, but so much of western civilization in focused on that, but it is the salvation of their souls that they should pay more attention to.
