This is my first year having maximillian in my flower garden,Is it necessary to cut back ,before winter ?
Thanks for any help u can give me .

OH, one of my favorite plants! Love those sunflowers. Anyway, I don't cut mine back until November or December when I need an excuse to be in the garden. Some years I don't get around to them until later. They don't mind. I'd not cut them back to the ground now as leaving a stubble helps protect them over winter.....traps snow or retards wind over them. So if they are in a very visible area, wait until later to cut them back to about 10 inches.

If it gets dry and ugly looking you can cut to the soil line. Or wait until your first frost and then you can cut back.
