This might be a good one for mythbusters. What would happen and how long would it take if I replaced all the water/antifreeze with gas?? How long would it run before (i assume) it caught fire or would it explode?

First off...mythbusters only investigates myths. Putting gas in a radiator is not a myth because it is so stupid that no normal person would try it. Go try it then give mythbusters a call>

Just to correct some of the numbers. The flashpoint of gasoline is about -45F. More importantly, the autoignition temperature is 475F.

Gasoline has a very low specific heat, which means that it would work poorly as a coolant. Your engine will run hotter. The odds are the fuel will be boiling before the engine fully warms up. The more volatile components will begin to boil off at temperatures as low as 85F. This will cause your cap to pop, and hot vaporized gas to escape. It would flame off in the presence of any ignition source. Your car will ignite, your engine would be engulfed in flames, an you won't be able to tell us how the experiment went.

Good luck.

I want to see someone do this. Well since gasoline can start to boil at about 100 degrees fahrenheit, and cars run at about 180 degrees, your car would overheat quickly. the flash point (the temperature it takes to autoignite fuel) is about 500 degrees. I know that combustion temperatures are a couple thousand degrees, half that goes into the exhaust, and half gets soaked up by the engine. but im not sure how gasoline would react inside a sealed cooling system.

If you started with cold engine and a properly working cooling system and you vented the overflow container away from the car. The liquid gasoline would flash off fairly quick. If the vapors ever get to an ignition source, that is where the fun starts. I wouldn't want to be there.

I only live in the UK and I imagine that I would be able to see the mushroom cloud from here (If you do it on a clear day)

gasoline is highly combustible, operating temperatures of car engines are at least 220 degree F. it would be an explosion for sure....
