Total investment = 8 + 12 = $20
Total money received = 10 + 14 = $24

So profit = $4

This one's very easy. If he buys the toy, consider the amount paid to be negative. If he sells a toy, consider the amount to be positive.

-8+10-12+14 = 4

He earned $4.
