You can't unless you can look under her tail, and see the white of an eggshell. That can happen but not always. If you see it, you know for sure but if you don't...you really can't tell. If you THINK she may be pregnant and having trouble passing the eggs (egg bound), you need to have her checked by a vet or at LEAST a reputable reptile breeder. If she's egg bound, they'll have to help her deliver the eggs. Usually though...if she's an adult, and in enough substrate (sandy, moist bedding) and is pregnant, she won't have trouble. She will dig a hole and bury the eggs.

Just for the record, a female turtle does NOT need a male in order to lay eggs. The eggs will simply not be fertile. Secondly, turtles do breed. The eggs are fertilized inside the female....not after they're laid.

box turtles don't become pregnant, they become gravid. There is only 2 ways to tell for sure if she is gravid.
1. take her to a vet for x-rays
2. she lays eggs

Anything else would just be a guess. Even if you see breeding, it doesn't mean she will become gravid.

I didn't think turtles got pregnant? I thought they buried their eggs in the sand and were subsequently fertilized? I guess I was wrong ...

With all due respect to fellow herps and collectors but when an obviously ignorant person or a n00b starts spewing out incorrect information i believe it is a better policy to try and teach these people something instead of belittling them. Trust me sometimes I wanna tear into the *** of every dim person that refers to venomous snakes as being poisonous and other similar misconceptions. But instead i try to educate these people and hope it sticks so they can pass that information onto the next clueless reptile enthusiast and it may actually save some animals from being harmed by someone who doesnt know anybetter than to be afraid of them and may harm or kill them. Sorry i started ranting on there. But remember dont hate, EDUCATE! haha have a good one ya'll

do no longer examine her. you are able to crack the eggs interior her attempting to palpate. She does no longer be doing what you're saying if she wasn't attempting to place eggs. bypass away her on my own. She made could desire to start over simply by fact she must be left undisturbed till shes accomplished. they could desire to get an excellent drink of water between attempt's.
