If you clean their cage regularly, wash all their bedding regularly, scoop their litter box twice a day, feed them a good, high-quality food (one without fish), and have them altered (not descented - that has nothing to do with their overall smell), then no, they will not smell horrible. I have five and there is very little smell, other people (that were under the impression that ferrets smell horrible) have even commented on how little they smell.

We bought our daughter a ferret for Christmas a few years ago. He was descented and neutered. They do NOT have to be in pairs. If you spend alot of time playing with one, or if he gets alot of playing time OUT of his cage, you don't need two. He'll be happy.
We never had one before and when we got it home, we let it out of the box and it started 'freaking out' and scared me to death! Here I found out it was his 'happy dance!'
Nevertheless they DO have a very musky odor, even if they ARE descented. And...you do NOT want to bathe them everyday, as that makes the smell WORSE. Once a month is fine, cause otherwise you're taking away oils that their body NEEDS.
You can potty train them too sort of. Once they are out of their cage to play, they will go potty only in corners of the room. So have a few triangle litter boxes and whichever corner he goes potty in, chances are they'll be using that corner from now on, so keep the box there for them.
Keep their cage CLEAN. That will help a bit with their odor. Keep an air freshener nearby too. You'll still have the very musky smell though.

They smell if you don't clean their cage every day. Remember, they are a lot of work and cannot be left in their cage all day because they get bored very easily. So as long as you clean their cage every day (and make sure you get the big 3 or 4 level cages) then they won't smell. Also, you have to get the female spayed or she will die from being in heat constantly.

They have an extremely musky smell that many people find very offensive.
My nephew has several ferrets. The smell doesn't bother him or his parents, but every time I go in his room, there's no denying that smell. To me, it's like mild skunk.

First of all, learn how to punctuate; or at least try.
Ferrets need a lot of attention, they nip and are very curious and get into everything.
Yes, they do stink. It helps if you clean out their bedding often and wash things they sleep/lay on. Like their hammocks or sleepy sacks.
You shouldn't bathe them daily, their skin will get damaged and they will smell worse because the body is trying to replenish the natural oils.

I had a ferret a few years ago. I LOVED her, she was a total blast but goodness she smelled. She was litter trained so her cage was covered with carpet and not wood chips. I vaccumed her carpet almost everyday and kept her litter box clean and it still stunk up my bedroom. They have a natural smell you cannot get rid of. We had her descented and I bathed her once a week and she still smelled. But they are a blast!!

I have two ferrets myself, and I find that if you keep the cage clean, there is no overwhelming smell. Their usual scent isn't strong at all, and a bath once a month is all they need. I found, too, feeding them a raw diet cuts bathroom smell considerably. Hope this helps!

Ferrets will only acumulate a stench if you let it get that way!
yea they do have a smell even if they are clean, but every animal does. Just keep your cage clean and give them a bath everytime befor you put them in the clean cage, this is what I did, and they didn't stink, actually they smelled like babypowder (like the shampoo i used) : )
As long as you take care of them, they will not stink!
~have fun
p.s.
If you get them altered, this will take away from thier natural musky sent, wich makes this possible!
