When in a file, click File, Print - stop - look for "Properties"
click the Properties button
it is usually found under Maintenance
If you cannot find it, go to HP's Help & Support site. HP is very good about support.

You have an older 840 C, I'm still happy with my old 882C.
But these old printers are not good enough for photos.

These old HPs have no way to check the ink from the computer like newer printers.

If you buy the newer HP 45 black cartridges there is a window on the cartridge itself that is like a gas gage and can give you an approximate amount left.
The color cartridges give you no clue until one color starts to run out.
