If when you pick at it with a fingernail, big pieces come out, or there are obvious signs of leakage, it is time to replace it. But if you have puttied windows, it is worth considering replacing the entire window -- you want double-paned glass for insulation, and the old wooden frames may have deteriorated.

When you poke at the putty with a putty knife and it is hard and breaks or if the window panes rattle or seem loose. Putty eventually hardens and shrinks away from the pane.

I would check it after so many months every year. If it starts cracking or peeling I would consider replacing it. If it starts leaking rain into the house replace it.

Just look for cracks or other voids. This will indicate the possibility for air or water to enter the home.
