I do not want to remove anything that may harm my computer or leave it vulnerable to viruses/spyware/adware.

The lower right-side of the taskbar is the "notification area." These are programs running in the background.

If you want to remove programs from the Start Menu:
Start
Settings
Taskbar and Start Menu

click the Start Menu tab, then click Customize
Here you remove programs from Start, but do not delete the programs.

Caution: do not remove anything you did not install. It could be a Windows file and you will render your computer useless.

You should only get involved with the items on the 'Startup' tab and leave the other tabs alone.

You can look up the name of the file of each startup item at this website:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

It will tell you about the item so you can decide whether you need it running or not.

To permanently remove the startup item, you'll need to remove it from the registry manually, which you should only do if you know what you're doing.
