That one is okay as a stand alone book.. it's very different from the others.. although, I'd recommend reading all of the ones before that in order.. (Interview with the vampire, The vampire Lestat, Armand, Queen of the Damned, Tale of the Body Thief.. I think is the correct order).. Those ones really don't work as stand alones..

read the rest first, it is important that you get to know all the aspects of Lestat before you read the end of this book. In my opinion anyway, simply because he is such a wonderful character, which it is hard to see in the first book which shows his crueler side, but in the rest you see the real Lestat which changed a little after the tale of the body thief. so go back to interview with a vampire and read them through please.

Armand is a stand alone for a later time.
Interview with a Vampire
The Vampire Lestat
The Queen of the Damned
Tale of the body thief
Memnoch the Devil.

All the rest can be read later, but those five were the first five written and follow naturally from one to the other.

it is ok to read by itself although you might not understand everything as well.
i have to say that it was by far my least favorite of the series---and it is very different from the other ones.
sooooo, if you don't end up liking it....please try one of the others. queen of the damned is my fave (and nothing like movie), but that one is definitely better if you read the other 2 first. i also enjoyed the last few too.

Why read them at all! I have never read an Anne Rice book or seen any movies in the same category. Why would one want to see mayham and feel fearful and angry. Mind you some of my adult children have read some of them, but I see it only making them shiver instead of happy.
