Both of my parents worked and since I was the oldest I was responsible for grocery shopping, cooking and looking after the 3 younger ones!!

Actually, both of my parents were home. My dad was a Chiropractor and he had his office attached to our house. He "left" for work at 10am and was "back" for lunch by noon. He went back to his office at 2pm and was finished by 5pm. It wasn't until much later that I realized that all kids did not have their parents as accessible to them as I did. I know I was really fortunate.
