I agree with MR knowitall, but put a socket (open side up) against the outside of the adapter to back it up when you hit it on something. That way you don't have to put it at an angle and the drive should fall into the socket.
If it is really stubborn you may need to drill a hole in it and put a screw or easy out into it and pull it out.

Tap it somewhat forcefully on something hard at a slight angle so that the broken piece can knock out of it.

Take it somewhere they have a welding machine and have a bolt tacked to the broke part and then pull it out>

when ya have ur tool man replace ur broken 1/2" drive , jus talk him out of a new adapter too ????
