That word has a bit of the old Soviet-style rhetoric quality about it and I'm wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to exactly what these people mean by calling themselves "progressive".

I find that I'm inclined to take that word as as meaning that those folks think they're better than I am but I'm sure that couldn't possibly be the case, could it?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Progressive is a term that is used to describe people of either of the two major parties of people that favor progress, hence progressive. This progress is in the quality of life for our citizens. Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican progressive. He opposed child labor and was against monopolies. Most Democrats are progressives because their party tends to favor improving people's lives. The Conservatives are regressives. Don't get me wrong. Sometimes we need to slow down the progress. If we are moving too fast. A good balance between the two sides is ideal. We have been in a regressive mode over the last 6 1/2 years and it is time to begin moving forward again. The forward movement in improving our lives will start January 20, 2009.

there is no such thing as the 'democrat' party.

and this is a sure 'tell' for a person with a political axe to grind when someone calls the democratic party this.

i think it's important to call people out on this sort of thing, if you don't, eventually this sort of nazi-style language manipulation will take root in america.

noam chomsky (who above all else, is a linguist) can explain this sort of thing better than i could ever hope to.

but to answer your 'question' the dems and other left leaning people call themselves 'progressive' these days because of a successful nazi-style language manipulation that has already taken place regarding the word liberal.

I know what you're trying to say. That we're communist dummies who hate free speech and enterprise. Nothing could be farther from the truth, in my opinion. No one is innately better than anyone else. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I think I'm better. We use the word "progressive" in that we are always trying to find ways to better the world around us and improve it. Although thats not to say republicans aren't.

an considerable pass between that demographic is unusual. in spite of the shown fact that it is completely a statistical shuffling of the chairs on the huge in the face of the extensive losses as different demographics flee the two the Republican and Democratic events. possibly this statistic does not replicate a lot an extremely substitute between that group because it does the shrinking of the dimensions of the pies.

Hillary Clinton absolutely hates the word "liberal", and wants to be called progressive. Woodrow Wilson was progressive and gave the word a bad meaning, so they dropped it for the word liberal....see saw hee haw

- They'll progressively take over any decision-making by Republicans/Conservatives

- They'll progressively take more of your money to "solve" problems ( name any problem that has been "solved" by government ( other than the Republican Welfare reform ?))

- They'll progressively increase the tax rates to get control of more money to spend the way they think, on programs they feel will "help".

- They'll progressively take power away from the voters, and give it to non-elected officials like Judges who are appointed, and seemingly make law from the bench.
