I get very nervous when we start talking about the worthy poor. The attitude is, if poor people could be trusted with money, they wouldn't be poor in the first place. Blessed are the trustworthy poor, for they won't spend our charity irresponsibly..Blessed are the skeptically merciful, for they won't bestow mercy on those who don't deserve it.

If I thought they were genuinely in need I would. Too often where I live you see them wander off round the corner and get into an expensive looking car, our local paper did an investigation and one was making a living from the amount he was getting each day he had a large house and very expensive car!!

That being said there was one young man who haunted me for some time. I had just attended the evening show of a well known medium and missed the last bus home. I had to take my last amount of money out of the autobank to pay for a taxi home I wasn't getting paid for at least two days. There was a young man very good looking sitting with his sleeping bag by the cash machine, he looked at me and asked if I had any change he had the most beautiful eyes and just a lovely way about him. I really had to apologise as I had no money apart from the taxi fare to get me home safely. He said he understood and I went away feeling very guilty. So much so that the next day when I had a little bit of change left from the taxi fare I went looking for him but to this day I have never seen him again.

That was about two years ago now and I still feel some guilt over that I don't know why. I have not had another beggar ask me for any change and it was a daily occurance in our city.

I always give money to beggars if I have it. In New York right after 9/11 I remember passing right by a black beggar and giving change to an Arab who needed payphone money instead. The black beggar got upset. At that time it seemed easier to give money to someone who needed to make a phone call before you gave money to someone who needed it just to survive day to day. Weird, huh? I stopped and approached the beggar nicely about it and the next thing I know he was telling me his life story and how he lost his family and his home (not due to the attacks or anything). I told him my job was hiring for overnight stock and that he should apply. He gave an excuse of not having a suit for the interview. I told him to tell them that Grace referred him (me). He said maybe. I never gave him any change but he walked away smiling, happy that someone even took the time to talk to him. Weeks later in New Jersey there was Douglas (the black beggar) and he was working! It was nice to see him with a job and he had quite a few customers. He immediately recognized me after only seeing me for that one night and I smiled and waved. Ever since then I have always tried my best to give to beggars, not always money, but sometimes a small food item, sometimes my conversation. One beggar has even offered to take ME out for a cup of coffee. We both laughed at that. The point is, they are people just like you and me who just need to know sometimes that there are still good people in the world who care. Apparently things have happened in their lives to make them believe otherwise.

Some of these people are professionals. In spain for instance they will mutilate thier children to become more real Our guide pointed out some of them are very well off. I will not give money to a beggar most times its for drugs or booze. It really gets them if you offer them food or clothing or material items. I will tell them all i got are bananas if i think they are conning

Yes, I give money to panhandlers who are old. If they look young and like they can work, NO.

yes and no!
Yes, if it's his only means of survival. ( The money is used to buy food to keep him starved at the moment)
No, because if we kept on giving money--- they will not work and exert effort to get money in a descent way. Sometimes they are abused by syndicates that uses beggars as their modus operandi!

YES i WOULD ...FOR NO OTHER REASON THEN IF HE'S ASKING FOR IT HE(OR SHE) probably needs it ...or at least think he or shedoes...in which case i'm helping them out.. all falls to my belief in Karma. If in fact the person uses it for something less than need fulfilling, then he or she will get what they deserve in the end be it drugs or not....people sometimes need to feel worth helping......we're all humans we all need a helping hand every now and then... i would hate to think the one time someone really needed something i refused to help them based on an unfactual assumption based on a biased belief that they were up to no good
