Return white socks to sparkling white by boiling them in a saucepan with a few slices of lemon. The lemon is a natural bleach. Dishwasher detergent also whitens socks - just add a little to the regular washload.:)

Can't really answer this one, but can give some advice:
(1) Buy more white socks so that you can accumulate a washer load of them (and don't you also bleach cotton underwear?)
(2) Keep in mind that they'll look greyer on the bottom when you take them out of the wash than when they're dry.
(3) If you wash and bleach your socks in hot water, they'll come out clean, even though less than white. After all, the only reason you don't have the same problem with your colored socks is that it doesn't show.
(4) Anything strong enough to get the bottoms of white socks really white would probably make them wear out sooner.
(5) Who besides you sees the bottoms of your socks, anyway?

I use to always think bleach was the only answer but a friend of mine introduced me to Biz. It's a powdered laundry booster. It can be used a couple different ways depending on the stain. You can add just a couple drops of water to make a thick paste for really stubborn stains or just add a 1/2 a cup to each load for extra clean bright clothes. If you've already dried the socks, chances are the bottoms won't come any cleaner but for the future I recommend Biz. Good luck! If it works for my husbands yucky socks it will work for you! Besides using bleach will break down fibres and you'll have thin holy socks...............

The way I do it is I put my whites in a bucket and soak them with hot water with about a cup of bleach added. Let them soak until the water gets cold. Then, wash them in your machine in hot water, adding a cup of bleach to the wash. Mine always come out looking just like new. Good luck!

I soak my whites in Oxyclean overnight in the washer and that stuff works the best of anything I've tried.
