It reminds me of the novel Fahrenheit 451 (I think that was it).

Essentially they were living in a "perfect" society with no cares, but reading was illegal and the fire fighters there were supposed to burn any and all books until one of them started to read them and blah blah crazy stuff happens from there.

It was actually pretty good. I think the quote applies very well to this book.

That whoever said it wants to try and keep people ignorant, and stop them from reading things and forming oppinions of their own. Brain-washing comes to mind. However, I guess if you are a person who is against people reading a particular book... Then convincing people to not read something would technically be smarter than burning them. Because obviously in order to burn the books you first have to BUY THEM. Which means you are funding the person who writing the stuff you are against. That's not too smart. Think the author cares about peoplle burning them? NOPE usually book burnings make more and more interested and want to read what's in the book. So, they simply print up some more and make MORE even more money. I think people should be free to read whatever the hell they want to read and allowed to think about the content on their own, and form their own oppinions.

I agree compleatly. Back in the 50s we still had novels by Oscar Wilde and we still had the Symposium but most LGBT people didn't read them, it was taboo to do so. And our community was gone from basically everywhere but Broadway and Hollywood.

Did explain why I agree with the quote well enough?

I completely agree with the quote.

To "Ban" something gives it power... you make a martyr out of it... but to just pooh-pooh it and get people to call it stupid and stop reading it makes it unworthy of reading.

Banning something only gives it the attraction of the Taboo.

Like kids with booze... Mommy and Daddy tell them "no" so it makes them feel good to thwart authority and encourages them to drink.

The "Smart" way of dumbing down a culture is to just discourage the pursuit of knowledge... Like we are right now in the US.
