Most local ordinances require food service employees to wash their hands after using the restroom. The restaurant's procedure should likewise require employees to wash their hands after using the restroom. The restaurant's management should do what they can to assure compliance, but certainly they can't watch every employee every second of every shift. If you see that happening, certainly talk to the restaurant's manager... and follow it up with a call to the local health department.

Every state in the US and i assume many other countries have mandatory hand washing for all employees before returning to work.
In NJ the actual law states that all employees must scrub hands for a minimum of 20 sec with soap and hot(as hot as is bearable) water.
If this was taking place in my restaurant I would want to know immediately. My employee would get 1 warning and after that would be sent packing. This is an unacceptable pratice and accounts for much of foodborne illness.

Yeah not washing hands after using the restroom is pretty bad but it's not as common as not washing hands after handling food products or cleaning. In the back of the house in the restaurants I worked at, none of the staff washed their hands after cleaning off plates, eating unused food, or when they had some food spilled on them. Usually they would just wipe it off with a disposable towel.

1) They are supposed to make them. Tell the manager. If the problem persists, report it to the local Health Department. (Or just eat somewhere else)
2) Many places have a special hand-washing sink in the back where hands can be washed more thoroughly than at the sink in the bathroom, with soap and sanitizers and a better drying system.
You may also want to observe if they have to wear gloves to handle food. Many places do require that nowadays, but employees are still supposed to wash their hands.

Having worked in the restaurant biz, I can tell you that most of my fellow kitchen workers did wash their hands, several times, back in the kitchen in the hand sink area. Unless YOU have followed these food workers back into the kitchen how do YOU know that that they do not wash their hands?? If they didn't do it while in the bathroom, it is because they WILL do it when they get to the kitchen. We also change our gloves every time they get dirty. Believe me, we always had a manager standing around watching our hygiene and he was always strict about the sanitation regulations.
Relax already and enjoy your meal...

All the restaurant restrooms I've been in have signs mandating their employees to wash their hands. If you see an employee walk out of a bathroom without washing his/her hands, why not report it to the manager?
Otherwise, stop bitching!

All restuarants have this policy. But they cannot have someone follow them around to see if they are complying with it. Do you want someone to follow you into the restroom and see if you wash your hands before returning to your table? Not all patrons do this either. Would you suggest they put cameras in restrooms? Might be a good idea, but no one would enforce it anyway. We just have to hope our servers have manners.

I guess it might be difficult to "make them", unless you followed them into the bathroom or had security cameras, but then I suppose they'd be screaming about "their rights"! It would be neat if there was some type of scanner that EVERYBODY had to pass their hands under, when leaving the washroom...or else the door wouldn't open...hey..you inventors out there....how about it!!!! I've seen so many people in washrooms...they come out of the stall and go out the door...back into the restaurant...handling the catsup and salt and pepper with their filthy hands...and you or I might be the next to sit at the same table. People who don't wash their hands are nothing but creeps.

Have you ever watched people in public restrooms in general?? It's shocking how few wash their hands!!! I suppose employees are the same. There are sanitation laws though, so I'd report it to a manager.

Just tell him that to avoid getting sick that he really should wash his hands after using the restroom. Tell him that it would give others a bad impression of him.
