I want to make a book like Eragon. I do not want it to become a Narnia trainwreck. Can I still use mythical creatures without it turning into Narnia?

Well I believe the best way to achieve that would be giving a rational explanation of why everything is there thus making it mythical to the reader but making it credible for the characters of the story

Indeed you can. The thing about Narnia is that it incorporated mythical creatures into the very fabric of the story. They replaced humans as the standard. If you avoid this, you can still have mythical creatures without having "Narnia".

Personally, I have nothing against Narnia.

Depends on what mythical creatures you want to use. Harry Potter for example using mythical creatures (Phoenix, Unicorn, Chimaera, Dragon), and Eragon too (Dragon). I guess it all depend on the plot and if you dont want to be similar with Narnia, keep it as minimum as you can (the mythical creature I mean).

try researching all these things, thier ancestry so to speak. Get an idea of the history and that will give you an idea of how to incorporate them realisically into the book.

the narnia books were great and very realistic in their setting, though my fave will always be the original the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. You should wish to write a book so good and loved as that.
