As everyone has mentioned, putting money in the middle is a house rule. Seed money is common, as is putting taxes and/or fees due in the middle, to be collected by landing on Free Parking.

However, I really think this is one of the main reasons why people think that Monopoly is an exceptionally long game. It makes it much more difficult to drive players out of the game through bankruptcy if the Free Parking money rules are used.

Stick with the balanced rules as written...the game is a 2 hour game with two players, and a 3-4 hour game with five players.

Collecting the money in the middle, well, even putting money in the middle is an optional rule. You are right about collecting it - you land on Free Parking.

You can also play that all fines go in to the pot. This increases how much 'luck' will determine the winner - a couple of nice landings on Free Parking can change the game

Officially you don't add money into the center. However, a very common rule is that any thing that is tax related such as luxury tax, chance, or community chest that requires a player to pay is added to the middle and whoever lands on free parking gets the money. It is less common but some people do add $500 to the middle before a game starts. Basically if there's money in the middle then landing on free parking should get it.

I never herd of putting money in the middle of the board before, but your right in saying free parking does nothing. I actually collect monopolies as a hobby, I have about 25 editions (yes, i have positively no live) and none of them mention putting any money in the middle of the board. Epically $500. I would suggest reading it again to make sure that you didn't miss read it. If your still confused email me at djdwyer42@yahoo.com and tell me if your using anything besides the standard edition.

It isn't a real rule. But the way my family plays is as follows: All fees that you get from chance and community chest go in the middle. Also the fees you get from landing on the $75 between the two royal blue properties and the tax thing before the first railroad. go there. You put $500 to start and the second time you only put $50.

Collecting at Free parking is an optional rule, for people who add extras. You must decided at the start of the game to play it.

Most times I play the free parking collect fees rules

There is no way to collect the money if you play by the rules. if everyone you play with agrees, you could always add it as your own rule. When my family plays, it is understood that when you land on free parking, you collect the money.

If you use official rules, you do not put money in the middle and you do not get any money from free parking.

However, you can make up your own rules. We put money from fees (hospital bill, luxury tax, etc) in the middle and whoever lands on free parking wins the money.
