Cancer, birth defects, diseases and all other awful things like that. Too much to name! Are these things products of Evolution? Didn't Evolution cause these things to exist? I was having a conversation with someone the other day and he was telling how evolution was this perfect, flawless thing. And that just hit me. How great is Evolution really? Disease's, cancers, brain tumours, birth defects, MS, the knowledge to kill, hurt ect. Aren't these also products of Evolution? If Evolution was perfect, why would it create such flaws?
Now I don't know too much about science, and this may be the dumbest qustion ever asked. But I'm just curious. Thoughts.

I was a biology major...

Cancer is actually caused by a mutant gene -- not evolution -- so your question should actually be two questions...
Evolution is characterized by how Natural selection "selects"... and the "fittest" species survive.

Natural selection is the process by which genetic mutations that enhance reproduction become, and remain, more common in successive generations of a population. It has often been called a "self-evident" mechanism because it necessarily follows from three simple facts:

Heritable variation exists within populations of organisms.
Organisms produce more offspring than can survive.
These offspring vary in their ability to survive and reproduce.
These conditions produce competition between organisms for survival and reproduction. Consequently, organisms with traits that give them an advantage over their competitors pass these advantageous traits on, while traits that do not confer an advantage are not passed on to the next generation.

Okay --- this is too difficult to explain...
Sorry...
but good question! : )

For a mistake to happen there must be a purpose or intent. Evolution is simply the change that occurs to adopt and survive. As noted by someone if you take the t-rex example the creature was near or top of the food chain with short arms so why would it need to change. Creation would have to be endless chain of more powerful or as powerful beings or you think something existed without a creator in which case why can matter just always exist in some form that eventually made this world.

The evolution is defined as a process of developing. Which something, and/or anything changes to a complex or better form. Bacteria are living organisms too. They would do anything to survive just like any organisms would. Anyways, are you saying that the world was better off without evolution? Without evolving?

All organisms has the natural ability to adapt to another environment. Without such ability, they would not survive. Bacteria equally has that ability as well, since the bacteria is an organism too(obviously). Who said evolution was perfect? Evolution is a step towards perfection. A step to improve. Not really a perfection itself. Any species would still evolve if it's necessary. Not one species is perfect yet. I'm not sure if any species would reach perfection though.

There is no such thing as evolution, like you just said, how could there be. If everything is evolving and we know we have at least 6000 years of recorded history why is there more diseases now than ever before and now we are worried about small pox and the mumps and measels coming back, no evolution, no way.

There's never a dumb question. ( I've come across foolish ones though).
Evolution has made countless mistakes, they are the ones that died off. Plant and animal alike, they died off because they could not live in this ever changing planet.
We ourselves are the most adaptive creature on earth. We can live anywhere with darn near anything eating away at us. Still our race continues to thrive.
Cancers, tumors, defects, MS, insane knowledge have evolved with us, but have they killed us off as a race?
No because we ourselves evolved with the diseases, and cancers, as well as the defects and MS. and we have always since our conception as a race, we have always had that innate desire to kill, or hurt. That did not evolve, that was always with us.

Evolution is an absolute; as it unfolds as it does, there are no manipulable alternatives. I think the threat is the human species trying to manipulate evolution according to their parochial ideas. The ego centrism involved is against the laws of the universe, and, must be fallible, because, after all, none of us can claim that they are infallible.

your friend is right... evolution is a perfect thing... evolution comes from nature and nature is perfect... what happened?religion interfered or high jacked human evolution... look at the trees, the animals and birds and even the insect life.. the evolve quite normal and healthy... but the human race and it's religions are creating disturbances, imbalances in nature... that is why the human race gets the illnesses you mention and until we understand the damage religion does to nature itself the human race will continue on it's path to extinction

You are thinking like a human. Egotistically. From the disease's point of view he is doing great -moving up in the world, able to live longer, in more environments etc.

Nature and the universe does not revolve around you and I.

I personally cannot answer this question. I'm no atheist, but I do believe in parts of Evolution, and I believe it is the part in life that makes our world a worse place.
