In the article "Dating violence prevalent among students"
30 percent of U.S. college students have been in relationships that involve physical aggression, a U.S. expert said. "Even more have been in relationships that are emotionally abusive," Sandra Stith, director of the marriage and family therapy program at Kansas State University, said in a statement. "Likewise, approximately 25 percent of high school students who are in relationships are subjected to abuse."

I found more information about the study at the the college web site: "K-State domestic violence expert looks at dating violence among high school, college students

Right now education. People need to know how often this happens and how bad it is. Students, parents, teachers/adminstrators, and police officers.

Most important is that people first need to know the warning signals and what to do.

And people need to know that this is a common serious crime and it needs to be treated like a serious crime (arrest and court and prison) and how to support victims through it.

All you need to know is that the party system is a sham, which exploits the system as a whole. Any individual in a party is going to have to scratch backs once in office. An exception may be Ron Paul who is in the Republican party, but he is making so many promises that he will be lucky to even keep one since the system is based on party support. I don't even think he has said what his plans are for guaranteeing his promises. There is no way he will get nominated for the Republican party, which once denied the nomination it would be in his best interest to run as an independent individual claiming that the Republican party no longer carries the traditional Republican values. Slapping the party system in the face is what needs to be done. If someone could awaken the dormant votes then that individual would win by a landslide. I would vote for an independent individual, if one ever ran. Might not ever happen since by law in some states, you have to be in a party to run for a seat in the government. The last person that ran for president as an independent individual was George Washington. Ironically, he warned about the party system too.

Cut down on the social aspects of college and push the education more - after all, the courses should still be the main concern for attending college. Also, it might be a good idea to not make everything at college so co-ed. (Yes, I KNOW that even same-sex couples can be abusive, but it's not as common). Maybe colleges can offer theraputic sessions for students and remove anyone who is violent, harrassing, abusing or stalking anyone on campus. Zero tolerance is a good way to go. I think college is getting way too focused on the social aspect and not enough on the important purpose like earning that degree. If students want sex and dating, then they can go find it elsewhere. Too many problems when you mix work with pleasure.

There needs to be more education and prevention starting very young. Many children are growing in homes and in a society where violence is so attainable to see. We need to begin help teens and children learn how to deal with conflict. Most don't even know what conflict resolution is.

So education, prevention, and to make dating violence batterers more accountable for their behaviors no matter who they are.

Always,

K
