I mean, think about it, They were formed by a businessman for crying out loud! their music had no real message, other than a drunken idiot moaning "NOOOO FUTURE". Their music had little to no aggression or speed, and their "image" was purely so that other drunken idiots would think they were being rebellious by buying their records. The only thing they really endorsed was apathy and stupidity. So in my opinion, the first punk band was the Dead Kennedys, followed by Minor Threat and Bad religion. Do agree? or do you have a reason why I'm wrong?

The Ramones and the Clash did set the stage though. Joe Strummer was awesome.

right, MC5, The New york dolls, The Kinks, ect. I'm just saying that holding the Sex Pistols up as the epitome of a "dead" genre is kind of ignorant.

you're lucky you included the clash or i would have a problem. sex pistols are punk in their own right. offensive and against the grain. kinda like nofx has always been of course they have changed a little with their last few albums and are a bit more political. here are today's best in my opinion. and they all don't have the same message. but their message is good nonetheless.

good riddance
bad religion
rise against
anti-flag
bouncing souls

I think you are on to something. IMO, I always thought The Sex Pistols were highly overrated. You are also correct in that their music lacked sonic aggression and speed. Whatever appeal they had was pretty much attitude. One studio album and they were given a ticket to the RARHOF. Of course, Johnny Rotten didn't attend the induction, calling the museum a piss stain. However, it would be difficult for me to call them anything else other than punk. I am trying to find where a businessman formed them. I believe various members were together in some form so that might not be totally true.

No, I think they were punk. I mean they weren't hardcore punk for sure, which is heavier and faster, but they fit most of the genre's characteristics. I'm listening to "Anarchy in the U.K." right now. They have the punk rock lyrics, along with the vocals, the song isn't much slower than "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones, and the guitar parts are somewhat distorted chords. The Sex Pistols have the basic anti-establishment views, and they are influential to punk rock.

The three bands you listed are more hardcore punk than just regular punk rock.

The Pistols had the punk attitude although I think they were not the best punk band...The Damned were!!! The bands you listed as the first punks would have never existed had it not been for the Sex Pistols, The Damned & The Clash & of course, The Ramones!!! Good question but I don't agree with you!

If the Pistols weren't punk, then punk doesn't exist. The Pistols were the epitome of punk. You can't redefine the term to mean something different, based on what you would like to be true.

"I wanna beee - anarchy !"

Things when downhill after Matlock left and Vicious replaced him.
And don't believe all that Talcy Malcy claims about his role.

You also forgot how Iggy and the Stooges set the stage for even The Ramones and Clash.

They were one of the first punk bank bands. Back in the day their music was considered punk because there wasn't any other category to describe their music.

the sex pistols were anti-establishment punk in my opinon and again they obviously had different views from other bands out there, but they were definently punk.
