I have this car service at the dealership, which I trust. They told me that the check engine light was from a catalytic converter fault. The light does not go off and they have told me that I need to replace the CC which will cost over $1400. What will happen if I don't get this repair done?

As I said, I do have it serviced at the VW dealership. It has over 100K miles so a warranty repair is not and option.

Go to your dealership.

If you are in the US, all emissions components, including the catalytic converter are warrantied for 8 years/80K miles.

If it really is the catalytic converter, your dealership will fix it for you and charge the manufacturer.

Since you have over 100K on the engine, it's possible that the catalytic converter is not working as efficiently as the law would like, and the fault your getting is an inefficiency fault. I can't know for sure because I don't know which fault it is truly generating.

However, in states that require smog checks, you must get the catalytic converter replaced for it to pass.

If your state does not have a smog check, and your more worried about your pocket book than the enviornment, then leaving it alone (assuming it is a catalytic converter inefficiency fault) will not hurt anything else on the engine, it will just end up producing more hydrocarbon emissions than what the law would allow and create more smog.

Most parts store chains will read the code out of your engine computer for free if it runs well enough to get down to the parts store. Otherwise you can buy the 'reader' for about 50 bucks, and read your own code, and figuire out how serious a problem is before you pay for a tow, or to talk to the dealer. Most of the 'check engine' light functions are based around emissions control functions. If you have oil pressure, and cooling, you are probably good to make it to the parts store.

A catalytic converter does not cost $1400. If your car is under warranty, then you SHOULD stay away from those chain places; like Midas, they're a rip-off ... check out rip-off.com

I would go to a complete different dealer and get a second opinion, just like you do for a medical problem

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

AND THE PRICE WILL BE CHEAPER AS WELL.
