would you take highways or interstates as your means of travel?

I would start in the West and stay there. I would plan to hit The Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Monument Valley, Yosemite, Carmel, Mt Shasta, The Olympic Peninsula, and any other place that looked interesting or had good fishing. I would not hurry. In fact, any plans would be ripped up after about three days because that is how long it takes for most of us to re-gain our sanity after leaving the city. After a few days on the road you will begin to notice other sane people who will tell you about the best places to go. Take along your guitar and a few bottles of wine - the national park campgrounds are a hoot when the wine and music are flowing. Nice folks will join you for a sing along and will share their treats with you.

There are two options I'd select. Either take the back roads and byways or take a train. The advantage of the train is that you can really see the countryside. The disadvantage is that you can't really stop in each of the litle towns you might pass through.
So, I'd probably choose the back roads and byways, but I'd suggest you get a planned route from AAA or some other travel-oriented organization. That would help you avoid some awful overnighters, for instance.

As many back roads as possible and go to as many little towns I could and meet the locals. I would only go on a highway if I had to make up time to get to a place I really wanted to see.
