Because we Americans would rather cling to a stupid, archaic, outmoded way of thinking than ever admit that sometimes the rest of the world is right and we are wrong.

In fact, the more the rest of the world moves to an idea, the more resistant Americans get to it ... if we're not the "leader" in something, we just don't ever want to be seen as a "follower."

That is why there are only three countries left in the *world* that have not gone metric ... Myanmar, Liberia, and the United States. (See source.)

That stubborn refusal to recognize what the rest of the world sees as *obvious* is why we are the last to finally recognize that our President is a joke, that a war in Iraq is a *bad* idea, that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or that treating the rest of the world like valets is generally not a good way to win friends. It is why we are among the last to accept global warming as a major problem, or to ratify the Kyoto treaty. It is the reason why we are among the last nations (along with Turkey) to accept evolution.

I love my country ... and take pride in its willingness to go things alone ... but sometimes we do this to a fault.
