Sue + Fred = 42
Sue = Fred / 2

Plug the second equation into the first:

Fred / 2 + Fred = 42

Fred + 2Fred = 84

3Fred = 84

Fred = 28

Now that we know Fred we can find Sue:

Sue = 28/2 = 14.

Sue = 14.
Fred = 28.

Check:

14+28 = 42
28 / 2 = 14.

sue's age = S
fred's age = F
S + F = 42
S = (1/2)F
substitute for S
(1/2)F + (1)F = 42
(3/2)F = 42 multiply both sides by 2/3
(2/3)(3/2)F = 42(2/3); F = 42(2/3) = 14(2) = 28
S + 28 = 42
S = 42 - 28 = 14
Look back at the problem to see what they are asking.
Fred is 28
