They are made out of solid "cupro-nickel" an alloy of around 75% copper and 25% nickel, with small amounts of manganese and iron which improve some of the metal's properties.
Dimes and quarters are made of a pure copper center, with only a thin sheet of cupronickel on the outsides.
Due to the current prices of nickel and copper, a nickel actually costs more than 10¢ to manufacture.Theoretically, by melting down nickels and selling the metal on the market, one could expect to make a decent profit. This is why melting down coins is considered a federal crime, and can result in five years of jail, and a $10,000 fine....

Nickels are made out of a nickel/copper alloy (a mixture of metals), 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. Nickels have a smooth edge; the nickel is 21.21 mm in diameter and is 1.95 mm thick.
