hi there
does anyone know what would suit a size 16 54 yo mum?
my mum dresses a bit out of date and more like someone in their 60s-70s. everytime i go shopping with her she never finds anything suitable and ends up buying nothing.
she is a plus size which doesnt help though she has lost 2 stone through personal problems.
i guess i want to cheer her up by making her dress better as i know she would feel better about herself. she wants help but doesnt know what trousers, tops would suit her and alas so am i.
any suggestions?
many thanks

p.s pls dont bother writing things like bin liners or anything daft like that!

firsty, get her measured and fitted for a good bra, and correct knickers for her size - work from the inside out.

For tops get V necks, or cross over, hold up different colours of the same top to find out which colour suits her, (some colours wash people out).

For trousers get low waisted ones, that are not pleated at the front, maybe wide leg, to keep her body in portion. For skirts try A line.

Dress it up with a long necklace (it accentuates the V of her top), or a simple long scarf (which could hide large breasts if she feels self conscience) the main thing is to try it on, go shopping with her, be honest about what looks good and what doesn't. Also, wedge shoes are comfortable, and give her some additional height, as well as looking good.

And ignore the label for dress size, some shops she'll be a 16, the next an 18, or even 14.

so don't go for the elasticated waist option _ my mother is 63 a size 20 (UK and Ireland size) and she always looks good when shes heading out.

Go out for a few girly shopping days together, I'm sure it'll really cheer her up, gossip, chat and have a nice time. Here are some shops to look in:
Evans
Marks and Spencers
Principles
Debenhems
Also, subtly order the Simply-be Catalogue and the 2 of you have a flick through it - point out some things you think are nice and give her an idea of what is in style at the moment.
Some things she would look good in are:
Well fitted jeans - in a dark wash (trousers and skirts will look way better if they fit her properly - maybe ask in a nice shop for an assistant to help her get the correct size)
Nice underwear - she will look 100x better fitted properly and nice underwear always makes a lady feel good- try Marks and Spencers.
Some plain V-neck tees / sweaters - they will go with anything, try and encourage her to get some in pretty colours like blues, purples
Some elegant tunic tops - not cheap ones from primark in ridiculous patterns, nice simple ones which will hide her tummy and maybe a fancier one in a plain print or maybe in a silk type material.
Nice wide leg trousers- wide leg is in fashion atm and is versatile, it will also skim over he legs and bottom, making her legs look slim but not twig like.

I hope you're susccessful and that your mum cheers up =]

why dont you have a look at the site www.simplybe.co.uk - they start at size 14 & go up to a 32 (i think)...its a mail order catalogue for ladies with fuller figures.

you might get a few good ideas from there...it costs nothing to browse their shop. Marks & Spencers also have a good range of larger size clothes...quite trendy too...

good luck - i hope you manage to give your mum a 'make-over'...what a nice daughter you are!!

just because she is 50 doesnt mean she has got to dress old fashioned, I am 52, I dont exactly wear mini skirts and leggings but I try and be as fashionable as I can. the smock tops that are out at the moment are good for our age tell her because they hide any excess tummy you have, I wear them all the time

anything that anyone else wears ; the only exception is above the knee , belly shirts , teenager style clothes etc ; other than very trendy young clothes, anything is fine
