Why does it feel hotter when passing your finger over a flame, as opposed to through the middle?

The outermost zone of the flame is the hottest with temperatures climbing to as high as 1800 degrees celsius. Its so hot because due to a large amount of O2, combustion is complete and a lot of heat is released.
