jolly, putting judicial system aside. i'm discussing the human ethics aspect, in every day argument, of why some people think that a hate-crime murdered victim's life is more valuable than a victim's life of a murder in other circumstances.
how is a robber, who has the intent to kill, any less evil than the guy who had the intent to kill because of someone's skin color?

and under common law if a robber's gun discharges accidentally, whether intent or not, he will be charged with murder.

I don't think it is more valuable one way or the other. Death is a tragedy regarless of how it happened! I also think that a hate crime just gets more media attention due to the "racial" factor, whereas robbery happens all the time...no one is really shocked anymore be this.
It sucks, but it is a ratings thing!

It is not the victims life that is being evalutated but the intent of the crime. So a robber may carry a gun as a threat and be ready to use it but he did not intend to actually kill anyone. A muderer that kills after planning it out shows massive intent. Hate crimes are similar in the intent is not directed at a individual but all of a given group.

Basically the punishment is not determined by life worth, but by the amount of intent that the crimminal had. Otherwise accidental and unintentional manslaughter of a Senator would land you the death sentence but a plotted murder of homeless person could get you a few years. (I am *not* saying that one life is worth more or less, just trying to illustrate the point).

You made a ridiculous assumption about my motivations to discuss the crime, I don't care if it was a hate crime or not it was HORRIBLE and needs more media attention. Parents and young women themselves need to learn from this story.

Both are pretty trivial reasons to kill someone in my view.....
Someone would have to really do something horrible for me to even consider something like that......

same reason pseudo_pretty white girls if murdered get headlines but a pakistani or mexican if murdered does not even get into the news.
