I think I believe in both. I believe that life has the big picture sketched out for you. But there are different options. Kind of like an alternative ending in a movie. You can play out either one.
You are moving down a path in life but there are always choices. We are here to learn life's lessons, but how fast or slow you learn them depends on you.
2 examples:
Coincidence:
My husband's name (John) is the same as my Grandfather's,
My husband's date of birth is also the date of death of the same Grandfather. (Feb. 2) My husband was 2 years old at the time.
Fate:
When I was young I got fired from a job (a Bank, I couldn't seem to balance my checks and balances each night). I got hired at a new bank 2 weeks later. I worked there 1 day and did not like this new bank, it was too small and quite for what I was use to. So I called later that night and quit. The next day I got a call from the phone company and they offered me a job.
30 years later I am still with the phone company. If I had not been home I may not have ever gotten the call / message. It was before answering machines and voice mail.
To me that was fate!

I believe that things are just a chain of events that lead to a conclusion, and that conclusion depends on the incidents and minds of the things and people involved, no matter how you look at something you can always wonder at how it happened, especially when the odds are stacked against it ever happening.
Fate i would have to say is a thing that most woment believe in, especially when it comes to romance and affairs of the heart.
Do you really thing that some mystical force (or god) is playing a part in our lives, next you might as well say we have all been here before and we are just playing out the play that has already been written for us.
I dont believe things are meant to be, we all have the freedom to make our own choices, (unless of cource the little voice in our heads is actually the force that decides our fate) this means there is nothing and no one controlling us.

I believe in fate and that fate suffers from multiple personality disorder
FATE, DESTINY, LOT, PORTION, COINCIDENCE, DOOM mean a predetermined state or end. FATE implies an inevitable and usually an adverse outcome . DESTINY implies something foreordained and often suggests a great or noble course or end . LOT and PORTION imply a distribution by fate or destiny, LOT suggesting blind chance , PORTION implying the apportioning of good and evil COINCIDENCE: the occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection;
Fate is a fickled b*tch

Fate. Coincidence will only carry you so far before Fate himself shows up and hits you.
"LOOK PAL, THIS ISN'T A COINCIDENCE! ITS ME! FATE!"

I guess I believe in what you can call "fate." I believe that everything a person does and every experience they have is the result of genetic predisposition combined with actions learned from experiences. Everything in nature is on it's course and can't be changed or stopped. The idea of free will is an illusion, because the genetic and learned factors contribute 100% to the decisions a person makes.
