I am being told to junk my 10 year old penquin Biowheel. I've heard of the tetra Whisper and Aqua Clear but wated to ask what is the best pwer filter for my 29 Gallon freshwater Tank. I don't want a loud one or one I will need to replace a few years down the road. Also, do I get one for that size (30) or go with a larger model (40, 50, ect). So far I have a variety of tiger and rosy barbs, a pleco and a kuhli loach that are all happy together. Thanks for your suggestions!

Why and Who is telling you to junk your filter?I've got one, also had it for about 10yrs. I've had no problems with it and it keeps 2 very messy oscars tank very clean. If you insist on changing, get a canister filter.Your Penguin is also a power filter,so why fix what isnt broke?By the way, never change your bio wheels unless they are damanged. If you do your tank will probally have to cycle again, and you might lose all your fish.

If you Bio-wheel is in good working order,or if it just needs a new bio-wheel, why should you pitch it? You can get replacement parts(bio-wheels,impellers,etc. from the mail order places.
If you are determined to have a new filter,go with the Aqua-clear. They are easier to maintain (and also cheaper) than the Whisper. Ease of cleaning and sponge rinsing means you will do a better job of caring for your pets. I use several Aqua-clears in my tanks and am completely satisfied with them. If they have a weakness it's the fact that small snails can get into them and stall the impeller, but this is a rare happening.

Bio-Wheel is the best filter of the bunch. Why would you get rid of a perfectly seasoned filter? Replacement parts are cheap if its not working properly. I wouldn't trust the advice of that person, would it happen to be a big box store employee? Don't ever listen to them without getting additional advice, I'm sure they would love to sell you a nice new expensive filter for no reason.
