There is so much unjust in this world at the moment, and the one thing Mr Brown can do, is to allow parents the right of knowledge, the god given right to protect their children, and stop hiding the animals that live amongst us. I don't want a witch hunt, or to go on a vigilante manhunt, all I desire is to know if a paedophile lives in my local area. Children need protecting, and if we knew that info, everyone would be extra careful of the little cherished ones.

I can't believe the U.K. doesn't already have a system in place for notifying the public! Everyone has the right to know if a dangerous criminal is living in their neighborhood. We all know that pedophiles are rarely ever rehabilitated and often strike again soon after being released from prison (usually with the feeling that they have nothing to lose).

For those of you using vigilantism as your defense, we have these types of laws in the states and I have never heard of any group giving known pedophiles what they deserve. You shouldn't compare this to some random act of violence towards one pediatrician.

Sorry, but they are so disgusting to me, that in cases of child molesters, I would applaud lynch mobs. Who really cares about their rights??! You who defend the rights of a perverted criminal over the rights of an innocent child baffle me.

How many Madeleines, Jon Benets, and Adams do you need to read about in your news before you change your mind?

I tend to agree with some of the points raised by Wishmaster. Although I am a mother any would do anything to protect my child I think the problem lies with the legal system and to some extent society. We have a person go through the system and serve time for the crime they have committed. If they manage to serve their complete sentence in full what is left - that is what we have said is acceptable. Should we not look to change the punishment rather than have the ordinary Joe turn into a criminal trying to protect his/her family from an individual who has serve their time. Not that I am making excuses for the offender but if the crime is so hainess to the point where we believe that the person can never be redeem the most effective solution would be to take their life rather than teasing them with the hope of freedom.

No, and I'll explain why.

I believe that making public the sex offenders register will put the public in more danger, not less.

At present, those on the sex offenders register have to report regularly to the police and probation authorities. There are conditions attached to their freedom, which if breached, lead to imprisonment. These people are closely watched by the authorities, who know where they are.

Make the information public, and vigilante groups will hound them out of anywhere they try to live. They will end up fleeing and not letting the authorities know where they are. They will still be in your community, but under an assumed name, and without the authorities keeping tabs on them. So your children will be in more danger, not less.

Sadly, the general public can't be trusted with this information, because they would do these people harm. Yes, I don't really care much for them either, but once we let the lynch mob taste blood, where will they stop.

Remember the paediatrician whose windows were broken .."well, it's a paedo- something; that's good enough for me" said the great British public.

I have a very good friend who is a Police Chief Superintendent. She has told me and others that every person in every town or even smaller village lives within 10 minutes walk of a KNOWN paedophile. So you should take precautions as you think fit. If the name and address were known to all and sundry then although you for one would not make up a witch hunt, there are others that would delight in doing so and then all law and order would break down.

I do not believe in vigilantes or lynch mobs which is what would happen if the petition succeeds. I understand your concern (I too am a parent) but the time-served offender is on a register and is known. Of greater concern is the unknown fiend which your petition, if successful, would not inhibit. I am also surprised to find a lawyer subscribing to this petition. Once convicted, and time served, criminals have the same rights of privacy as everyone else. It's the job of the police to watch them, not yours. No, I will not sign.

No!

All this does is notify people of the CONVICTED paedo's.

What about all the evil ones that simply haven't been caught yet?

Let me tell you this, in EVERY town there are Paedo's.

You DO have them living near you.
There are these new inventions that have been around for a while now. They are called cars. These make it easy for evil people to travel anywhere in the country.

If your petition was to bring back the Death Penalty for convicted Paedophiles, then I would sign without a qualm.

Why can't the UK have a website like we have in the US that shows you exactly where they are residing? It would be easy and they wouldn't even need to develop the software wear. It would be just loading it with the content and going live.

I so agree with you and we have that in the united states now . I cant believe the uk does not . You guys seems to be really progressive and you do have universal healthcare which is what most of us are fighting for in the united states . Yeah most definately get Mr. Brown off his rear and make him let you all find out if your neighborhoods are safe . good luck and hope it passes soon .

Done
Wanted to add that we had a paedophile live two doors from us for years and never knew it. He abducted the neighbours little girl and kept her for the weekend, God knows what he did to her accept she has tried several attempts to kill herself, she's 14. Maybe if we had known we could have kept a better eye on our children. My children were "lucky" because they were boys and he only liked little girls. May be you would think twice about not adding your name if it was on your doorstep
