Tradition, there isn't any written rules that require number schemes like the NFL.

Numbers 27-49 seem to be Conservative choices. Goalies always shy away from players favorites (7, 9, 19...). # 1 as really faded out over the last few years too.

Same with D-man picking 2-8 but never 9 are just old hockey tradition that start in youth hockey. Many coaches discourage player from picking high strange numbers and goalies picking "player numbers" to stress the importance of team and not individualism

Yea there seems to be an "unofficial" numbering system in hockey, not as rigid as the NFL but still there.

1- Goalie
2-7 - Defenseman
8-28 - Foward
I suppose they added goalies in the 30s for backups.

I know at least one NHL team tried to limit numbers above 35, personally I don't think it really matters, how does a number contribute to the unity of a team?

Well the #1 thing was for soccer (futbol) because of the way the scorecards were listed with the goalie first and then the players. Also a lot of hockey goalies use the #1 because of this, also as far as I can remember it club be because of the scorecards having the goalies at the end of the list on hockey sheets , or it might just be a personal preference of the players.

It's tradition. 30 years ago goalies tended to wear
#1
#29
#30
#31
#33
#35

Over the last few years the tradition has changed (although Belfour changed to #20 to honour Tretiak) and rarely does a goalie use #1

They dont have to. Many also wear the #1 as well. I dont think there is a stipulation on what series of numbers net minders have to wear.
