It's today's society. Many are not taught the basics of human decency. There are very few consequences for one's actions and that starts at a very young age.
Many are taught that THEY are all that matters and they have a right to do anything they want to achieve the goal they want.

Even in school we are not teaching math, reading, history as much as we are teaching self gratification.

This is a question that would take an entire journal to answer completely.

I'll try to summarize.

Our society has been geared towards only judging a person by what they can financially accomplish. Even if it's through criminal means. Many people might condemn the method but still respect the fact that those people have some power and wealth. That's why we as a society like watching tv shows like the Sopranos and movies like the Godfather.

To further try and explain what I mean let's take Mother Theresa for example. Arguably she is thee number one person who throughout her life has tried to do everything in her power to help her fellow man. Now because her personal diaries have become public and there was a time in her life that she questioned her faith there is a segment of the Christian right who are trying to denounce her.

I mention this as an example of how when people question the meaning of it all especially when they are so widely respected, like Mother Theresa is, there are those leaders who become frightened that the masses will internally question also. Know what I mean? If Mother Theresa a devout Roman Catholic can question her beliefs it opens the door to everyone of similar faiths to question as well.

There are so many other factors to how our society has created an unfulfilled segment of the populous. There's mood altering drugs that we are being told will help our teenagers to like 'stepford' themselves into fitting into what society has deemed as the right path to being a productive member of society.

Our society worships money, social standing, and wealth. When many can't achieve this for themselves, and there are many who try and fail for many reasons, for some people it becomes more embarrassment and shame than they can bare. This struggle to meet the standards, that we have somehow let become the measure of a person, cannot always be met and should not always be met and some people can't handle the judgement others caste on them.

This ridicule I think is part of the reason that people end up going on shooting rampages. There's many different societal causes for people to feel outraged and disenfranchised and like they want out.

Sorry if some of this seems rambling and disconnected but like I said it would take a journal to adequately answer this question.

Really good question. A very difficult answer though. There so many factors.

Assuming your talking crime on the streets?

Pretty complex question when you factor in all the reasons. I think stiffer penalties and fewer liberal judges would be a good start though.

Not to sound like an alarmist but I really do feel that Meth is an epidemic and contributes to this greatly.

It's a result of our nation's passive acceptance of guns in society. So many people are so worried about their "freedoms" being taken away without thinking through the true dangers of firearms. In my state, it's illegal to set off firecrackers or hit golf balls in the park. Where are the priorities?

because people are babied and cant handle others not liking them, instead of teaching kids to grow up and become productive members of society we are teaching them that noone is suppose to say anything bad to them.
