Either way is fine. Remember, a point on a graph is defined by a set of numbers. For example, p(x,y) is any point defined by two numbers x and y. So we can measure off the X direction and then the Y direction from x. Or we can measure off the Y direction and then the X direction from y. Either way, we'll have x and y, which is all we need for the point p(x,y).

This works for 3 dimensional graphs as well. Here p(x,y,z) is defined by a set of three numbers x, y, and z.
