I thought my apple snail was dead. So I took him out of the tank and forgot to throw him away. Well when I came home, the snail had moved. I put him back in the tank, and sure enough he started moving. He was out of the tank for about 4 hours! Any explanation??

they can live for a few days out of water, mine used to crawl out of the tank, across my desk and wind up on my computer. then my fish ate it... :(

anyway, no worries, as long as it's still alive. from now on leave it in the water unless you know for a fact it's dead. snails often rest and stay in their shells for long periods of time. two sure ways to tell?

1. smell it. if it smells like fish, you're fine. if it smells like rotting and makes you want to vomit... it's dead.

2. tip it over, if the snail is lose and moves around the shell it's either dead or dying. if it falls out completely it's dead. if it's in there good and doesn't move he's fine and just resting.

Apple snails are adapted to live out of water for short periods of time. On one half of their body they have gills for water and on the other side is a lung for breathing air. If an apple snail is out of water, the only real danger is that they dry out, though that can take a long time if they close their shell up to conserve moisture. They will not sufficate like a fish will or some other snails will out of water.

Mystery and Apple Snails are amphibious, they also construct their egg cases out of the water. They also breathe through a "snorkel" tube so they won't have to leave the water if they don't care to. If you can find a book or some web articles a little research will uncover a lot of interesting stuff. They are really fascinating critters.

they will come out of the water (usually up a plant stem) to lay their eggs over the water (to protect them from predators) the eggs are a raspberry pink alien mass.
if they dont like the water their in (no food, poor water quality....) they can climb out and try for a new water source
they just bring a little water along inside their shell to keep them going
