Referigerant contains HFC (hydro florocarbons) and or CFC (Cloroflorocarbons). Both contribute to the destruction of the ozone. Even at this, Pools are a larger culprit because the clorine evaporates into the atmosphere doing exactly what referigerant does. Clorine is a CFC. Amonia was first used for refrigerant but it is toxic and caustic. No problem unless there is a leak.

For many years refrigerators have used Freons as the working fluid. These freons when released to the atmosphere destroy the ozone layer (Ozone in the sky at about 70,000 ft is good for the environment but ground level is bad) and contribute big time to global warming.
