The ancients Greeks were more sensible. In their version Deucalion and Pyrrha float to safety in a wooden chest.
After the Great Deluge the animals are born anew from the mud.
The story is found throughout the ancient world. It was not meant to be a parable--the Great Deluge was treated as an historical fact by people of those times.
Presumably the Biblical ark was only believed to carry two each of all the domesticated animals -- cattle, donkeys, horses, sheep, etc. & not the wild animals.

I always wondered where he, Noah, put all the fish.
I also wondered why God drowned all the young children, the infants and the women pregnant with absolutely innocent children.
Some people keep looking for the ark. If it ever existed, it's gone. Noah had to take termites too you know.
You're right. It's a story but no more ridiculous than any other and perhaps less pointless than many.

I don't have any problem with God warning Noah of an impending cataclysm. And Noah preserving some of the Lifeforms in his area. I doubt he gathered beings from the whole World, as we know taking some out of their natural environment can cause harm to other forms of Life.
So the legends of the flood from other parts of the World. And other good people being warned. Makes more sense.
I find it harder to believe that any time a natural disaster happens. People think it is Gods revenge!

The thing that most thinking people realize is that the bible is not to be taken literally. Most stories in the bible are based on actual events but I think in many cases they are dramatized a bit for impact. The key is to look for the moral of the story and not dwell on the details.

If people would have just listened to Noah and God the ark would have had people on it ,instead of animals. It's about Trusting God.
GOD BLESS
