There will be even less before the smoke clears.
There is always better people for the job but how many people want to live in a goldfish bowl the rest of their lives?
You have the media on every mistake, every trip up the stairs, your kids are under scrutiny 24/7(let alone 4th cousins), you can't go anywhere alone, there is always Secret Service around you for your protection and even when you resign or get defeated in an election you always have someone with you. You can't drive off to think! You have to meet people you don't like and be nice to them!
You really have to have a family in politics or have a mind set that this is what you want the rest of your life.
I wouldn't want the job for all the money in the world, would you?

Because to run for president in today's world practically requires that you have been groomed to run from the minute you were born. Media scrutiny and the desire to "dig for dirt" on the candidates makes many potential candidates wonder if they are willing to subject themselves and their families to having every detail of their lives - past and present - constantly discussed and displayed. Many of our great past presidents and leaders could never be elected in today's world. You can only imagine what the media could have done with Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, FDR, and others to mention a few. All had some pretty serious "skeletons" in the closet. They wouldn't even get to the primary.

There are at least 10 Republican candidates, and nearly that many Democrats. Not to mention Libertarian, and Green Party candidates. However you are correct that only about 8 have a viable shot at their parties nomination.

There are more than eight, but appearently, the media only has eyes for those eight... not many have money enough to compete.

If they are "wonderful leaders" their first job is to get elected.
If you can't get that far, your probably not made of the right stuff
